Equip the Hammer and Build Salvaging Proficiency

Hold R to open the tool wheel and assign the Hammer to a quick slot. Tap R to cycle between your equipped tools while gathering. Keeping the Hammer available this way makes it easier to switch back when you reach machines or other debris.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
Using the Hammer to break boxes, crates, tires and scrap piles raises Salvaging. The Progression tab is where activity points buy perks; closed-beta options included larger carrying limits and a chance at double Hammer yields. Keep those older perk options separate from instructions for crafting a stronger Hammer in the demo.
Hammer Upgrades and the Demo's Proficiency Cap
The starter Hammer is a low-strength tool. Use it on debris it can break, and keep closed-beta Hammer upgrade routes separate from this demo walkthrough. Raising a proficiency and crafting a different tool are distinct progression goals; the starter recipe above is the route to getting your Hammer working now.
What to Check if You Cannot Craft the Hammer

Materials are missing: check that you have five Screws and five Plastic Discards available for the recipe. If either is short, collect loose pickups in the Scrap Quarter. You can gather these before owning a Hammer, so a pile demanding that tool is not your starting point.Playing this video connects to YouTube.
- The ingredients are ready but you lack energy: the Hammer also costs two battery charges. Recharge your Battery at an energy station, then return to the Project Station. Having the crafting materials does not replace the energy requirement.
